On Dusshera or popularly known as Vijaydashmi, lord Rama killed Ravana and conquered Lanka. To celebrate this victory, effigies of Ravana, his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhkaran are burnt as the special attraction. We organize special pujas of lord Rama, Laxman, goddess Sita and Hanuman. This festival is celebrated by sisters who put tilak on their brothers foreheads for looking after them and protecting them from the evil forces.
Also, on this day after 9 divine nights of Navaratri comes Dusshera or Vijayadashami that celebrates goddess Durgas victory of good over evil. In Bengal, Dusshera is celebrated as Durga Puja. Idols of the goddess Durga are worshipped for nine days, and on the tenth day immersed in a body of water, such as a river or pond.
